The invitation had me in stitches. We were being invited to the third anniversary party for Mitzy and Bowser. Our neighbors were actually creating an event to honor their pets. How many of my anniversaries had I forgotten?

Homemade banners touted popular phrases like ‘you ain’t nothing but a hound dog’ and ‘three dog night’. We wore name badges shaped like milk bones, nuts were in bowls with the dog’s names on the side, and some snacks looked like chew toys.

I was in the basement family room with the guys and noticed the happy couples domain. They had a huge corner filled with dog decor. It was complete with a portable space heater, a selection of dog clothing, and a foam dog bed. This was the family room and the dogs were definitely family members.

I was still digesting my dessert when I became determined to outdo the dog party for my upcoming anniversary. I was committed to planning a celebration that would dazzle my wife.

I listed my wedding anniversary first. I searched online for creative gift ideas. I researched unique anniversary parties and found that celebrating love can be lavish or on a budget. The celebration can be personal or public. You can plan an intimate occasion for two or include family and friends.

I worked on my computer, enlisted the kids help, and worked with the local office supply outlet to create everything. I used online templates to make my invitations, pictures were printed on glossy paper off my computer, and I converted our old 8mm movies to digital video.

My son played a mixed compact disc of music my wife and I love. I made six freestanding collages with pictures I printed from the computer. I used spray glue to affix each photo. I purchased a memory book for everyone to sign but with enough room to write comments. This has become a family keepsake.

My wife was a bit overwhelmed. The screen was filed with images and songs that amounted to the soundtrack of our lives together. To end the night we held each other on the dance floor to the tune that was played for our first dance as husband and wife so many years ago. I braced myself for the loving thank you as she looked deep into my eyes and said, ‘Okay Mister. Who are you and what have you done with my husband’.

The invitation with the photo on the front proved it. This couple was not freakishly attractive. Adorable yes, but not drop dead gorgeous. Unless your a passionate lover of your household pets. Our friends are big on anniversaries of all kinds and this time it would include presents for pooches. Their dogs had been part of the family for two years.

The old garage was converted to a sunken play room where the men went to shoot pool. I was not surprised to see that a large portion was dedicated to dog country. There was a humidifier, a portable space heater, foam dog bed, dog clothing, and lots of dog toys.

I used books from the library, magazine articles and went online to get ideas. I talked to my friends and family members to determine whether to go all out or stick to a budget. I aimed for somewhere in the middle and enlisted some help that is available to anyone.

We did a big party at the fraternal club we belong to downtown. A nephew served as a deejay, tiny white light strands hung from the ceiling, and all the table names were done with photos of that person with their name. The highlight of the show was a photo slide show set to music. I personally picked the songs and pictures and my computer did the rest.

We danced, we toasted, and we watched our old movies using new technology. A computer and projector too us on a journey of our shared life. My wife was transformed into the new bride of yesteryear. We took to the floor for the final dance surrounded by the people we loved the most and she started to thank me. I put my finger up to her lips and said: ‘Stop. You had me at ‘you’ll do”.
