How to Communicate with Children

If you study most relationship issues you will realize that they can be directly attributed to communication failure. There are times when you simply dont have any more words left for communicating with the opposite person. Usually such scenarios are common when talking to teenagers. Most parents simply cannot understand how to talk to their teenagers. Also more often than not what starts as a casual conversation ends up in a pep talk or a scolding session. So here are a few tips that will help you to have a meaningful conversation with the most important people in your life.

Children:

Most parents will accede with me when I say that comprehending a toddler is far easier than understanding a teenager. It is certainly no joke dealing with adolescents one moment they are on top on the world and the very next they become the biggest losers. Its time to experiment with makeup and other disastrous things like alcohol, drugs etc and of course there is an extreme amount of curiosity about sex So how do you tackle a teenager?. Its quite simple the more open you are with your teenager about these issues the better you will be able to equip them to handle these situations. Acknowledge your child’s emotions. A child learns to handle his feelings from his parents so make sure that you set a good example. It is not always easy to talk to your teenager but if you are lucky he/ she may talk to you  in which case you need to make sure that you ate listening carefully. Always make sure that you spend some time each day to talk to your teenager about his or her day but make sure that you dont turn it into a question and answer session, your teenager needs space and time. If you have a problem with your teenager yelling or screaming at him/ her will only worsen things instead talk to your child calmly stating  the problem and the solution.

Spouse:

It is not unusual for petty communication issues to eventually lead to estrangement and even a divorce if not tackled in time. When it comes to marital communication issues most people say that they find it difficult to handle a spouse who demands their undivided attention however what they fail to realize is that expecting your spouse to talk to you without the distraction of a blaring TV in the background is a perfectly normal demand . If you want your marital communication to be successful remove some time for yourself. Your career, household chores and kids can take a toll on your time and you may not get enough couple time to iron out misunderstandings or to discuss problems. it is important to be truthful but not judge your spouse. It is not an uncommon sight to see a couple arguing and then the argument quickly turns into a major fight with a lot of mud slinging at each others families and personal problems and this is exactly what should be avoided. If you want to have a happy life with your partner or spouse listen to him / her this will help you to spot the problems before they escalate. If you dont understand something or if you feel that miscommunication has crept in while talking to your spouse stop and ask your spouse to clarify instead of forming your own conclusions which are bound to cause problem. Also remember to always maintain eye contact when talking to your spouse.
